Thesis on the impact of product packaging

The division of labour meant that the produced goods had to be distributed and transported. Due to our climatic properties, even in the prehistoric ages some kind of storing vessel was needed to keep gathered crops in. This way the package became a connecting link between production and consumption. The importance of the link between production and consumption is growing in the urbanised societies. From the mid 20th century, packaging not only protects the product, but also is a tool of exhibition.

Beside the practicality, the aestheticism also is of great importance. Economical considerations vary by the packed product. In practice this means that the preference goes to selling the product and the most appropriate marketing is chosen for this purpose. An important part of marketing-communication for everyday goods, especially for those in bulk, is the packaging, its material, shape, colour, i.

The package's most important roles are to distribute the product, to protect the product during distribution and to sell the product. In the retail shops the information on the package takes the role of the shopkeeper, it is carrying a message of the producer to the consumer about the product.

That is why the package used to be called the inanimate shop assistant. The message apart of being informative, has also advertising effect which is crucial in the present market situation.

Advertisement has a long history, but it definitely blooms is in this century. Packaging as an advertising medium has almost the highest preference. The packaging feature design and advertisement are closely linked.

As every product and production system, packages and packaging have their effect on the environment. In the nineties, concern about environmental effects of packaging has grown very strong, almost exaggerated. The concern is mainly based on the role of packagings in exhausting the natural resources, and generation of wastes.

Packagings are lighter and more practical than ever. Still, sanctions on packagings on national and international level, packaging and packaging waste directives were born. On the other hand, from the citizens' points of view, packaging wastes are a very visible part of environmental problems. Those concerned about the state of the environment, can take part in reducing this burden through packaging recovery programs. In reality there are numerous better opportunities to save resources than to omit packaging, or recycle packaging wastes.

Moreover it is questionable, whether the present packaging waste recovery actions have positive environmental impact. First it shall be analysed, what are the environmental impacts of packaging. In dictionaries very few explanations on packaging terminology are given. Even in the scientific literature, it is confusing what is meant with packaging. It can be primary packaging, or include secondary and tertiary packagings.

In this thesis, the word package is used for the individual product, and the term packagings as an overall expression for all packages, to indicate the product. The term packaging is used for industrial activity, and to pack for the individual operation. Since it is rather difficult to concise packaging of all goods, this study deals mainly with primary packaging of bulk goods.

It will be indicated if the array of goods is enlarged. The intention was to draw a holistic view, where besides the ecological, the social, technical, legislative and economical aspects are also analysed.

The aim was to analyse the packaging system, point at problematic parts, show improvement options, and predict possible changes in the structure of the packaging system.

The study is a continuation of the diploma work of the author written at Technical University of Budapest, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Department of Industrial Management and Economics: The Role of Packaging in the Marketing-Communication, with portraying packaging as information medium.
