The floras and faunas of the temperate deciduous forest

  • Beavers are huge semi-aquatic types of rat who are understood for constructing canals and dams;
  • Temperate deciduous forests have a great variety of plant species.

The temperate deciduous forest is a biome that is always changing. It has four distinct seasons: Winters are cold and summers are warm. Temperate deciduous forests get between 30 and 60 inches of precipitation a year.

Plants & Animals in Deciduous Forests

Precipitation in this biome happens year round. Changes The leaves of deciduous trees change color and fall off in the autumn and grow back in the spring.

  1. Forests here are dominated by a deciduous species of beech, Nothofagus obliqua , which usually grows amid evergreen trees more typical of the broad-leaved forests bordering this area to the south. The temperate deciduous forest biome is an area that is very cool and rainy most of the time.
  2. They are described as temperate rainforests owing to similarities with the flora, structure, and ecology of tropical rainforests that are found in similar environments to the immediate north. There are some conservation efforts in place but the damage has already had a severe impact in many of these biome locations around the world.
  3. However, the canopy is dense rather than thick like in a rainforest. Brown bearcommonly discovered in cool mountanious areas.

The broad, flat leaves of deciduous trees lose water quickly. In the winter when the ground is frozen, it is difficult for them to to absorb water, so they drop their leaves! Deciduous trees stay dormant in the winter and bloom again in the spring!

Plant Life Temperate deciduous forests have a great variety of plant species. Most have three levels of plants.

  • Temperate deciduous forests get between 30 and 60 inches of precipitation a year;
  • Even if they do know, they may think that as humans they are more important than these plants or animals;
  • Nevertheless, they likewise feed upon bugs in some cases occasionally;
  • They are described as temperate rainforests owing to similarities with the flora, structure, and ecology of tropical rainforests that are found in similar environments to the immediate north.

Lichen, moss, ferns, wildflowers and other small plants can be found on the forest floor. Shrubs fill in the middle level and hardwood trees like maple, oak, birch, magnolia, sweet gum and beech make up the third level.

Shrubs and Wildflowers

Conifers like spruce, fir and pine trees can also be found mixed in with the hardwood trees in this biome. Sometimes the taiga and the temperate deciduous forest overlap. Animal Life There is great diversity of life in this biome.

Temperate Deciduous Forest Biome

Insects, spiders, slugs, frogs, turtles and salamanders are common. In North America, birds like broad-winged hawks, cardinalssnowy owls, and pileated woodpeckers are found in this biome. Mammals in North American temperate deciduous forests include white-tailed deerraccoonsopossumsporcupines and red foxes.

Animals that live in the temperate deciduous forest must be able to adapt to the changing seasons.

  1. Some trees characteristically produce large numbers of seeds "mast" in certain years and few in others.
  2. Raccoons are omnivorous animals. They choose to reside in forest, swamps, bushes and thickets.
  3. In some areas, they are now growing back in second-growth stands of many of the same tree species. They create a type of canopy for the lower areas of the forest.

Some animals in this biome migrate or hibernate in the winter.
